Laying the Groundwork: Planning & Research
Our first step is deciding what type of book you want to create, who it will be about, and how you are going to bring it to life. We will talk about cleaning up the applicable branches of your tree in Family Tree Maker before you begin, and fleshing out your research to find the images and stories that will provide context to your tree.

Diving In: The Power of FBC
Putting pen to paper is often the hardest part. Not anymore! I will hold your hand as you get started with Family Book Creator, choosing the settings you need to turn your data into an initial narrative with the click of a button. You can edit it, add to it, or just use it as a reference for your own writing.

Taking it a Step Further: Adding the Extras
Now that your book has a foundation, you can go a little further with some optional add-ons to your book. I will show you how to add things like word clouds, maps, and other images. We’ll also discuss incorporating your own writing (with pictures!) and design ideas.

Finishing Touches: Printing & Distribution
Let’s get this book off of your computer and onto your bookshelf. We will talk about finalizing your book and turning it into a PDF. Then we will step through the process of using print-on-demand publishing using Lulu.com. Finally, we will talk about ways you can share this book with your family.

Let’s Celebrate! Student Showcase
You did it! You created a family history book! It doesn’t have to be perfect; the goal is to gain confidence with the process. During this session, we’ll show our books (optional), celebrate everyone’s progress, and share ideas for future projects. Previous participants remarked on how surprisingly helpful this session was in demonstrating the wonderful variety of what is possible.

General FAQ

Is this the same course offered through Kinseekers/Pastfinders in 2024?

Yes, it is! With some tweaks. You are welcome to take it again if you choose, but the content is broadly the same.

Will there be recordings of the sessions made available?

Yes! Each month I will record our meeting and upload that recording to the course within 1-2 days. Recordings will stay available for the length of the course (through January 2025).

Will you ever offer a class time better for England/Australia/my time zone?

I am always open to alternate class times if there is enough interest. Please post in the FB group or email info@rebeccashamblin.com to let me know your request!

I tried to order the course but I can’t tell if it worked.

Once you are successfully enrolled, you will receive a welcome email about the course. If you do not see that email (check your Spam folder!), then it likely did not work, so please try again.

— Make sure you are logged in to your rebeccashamblin.com account.

— If on mobile, try desktop, and vice versa. Sometimes specific devices are just being troublesome that day!

— Make sure to tick the ‘I accept the Terms & Conditions’ box at the bottom of the screen before clicking ‘Place Order’.

Pre-Requisites

Do I need to buy FTM and FBC to take this course?

You are welcome to simply watch and learn skills for the future without purchasing the software. However, I do think people generally learn best by “doing”, and following along with the suggested assignments each month is the best way to get and stay motivated.

Do I need experience with Family Book Creator to take this course?

No, I will walk you through it from the very beginning

Do I need experience with Family Tree Maker to take this course?

You will need at least a small tree built on Family Tree Maker in order to use Family Book Creator. You don’t need to be an expert by any means, but you should understand how to edit facts (dates, locations, and Description field) and add media.

Do I need Ancestry.com to take this course?

No, this course does not involve Ancestry.

What if I missed the first few meetings – can I still register?

Yes! Go ahead and enroll, then watch the recordings of the previous months to catch up.
