   I am still in the process of finishing my first Family Book using Family Tree Maker as the tool to organize all the facts about family members. I only wish I was aware of “Leaving a Legacy: Turn Your Family Tree into a Family Book” earlier in my efforts. Of course some of the items in the book I had already learned by trial and error but some of the areas I am working on (working with images, word setting, etc) plus future areas (printing a book) are and will be a big help. The book is not only a great overview of how to get started but a resource tool to go back to when you have certain types of questions. Also the ability to utilize Family Tree Maker and Family Book Creator for me was an absolute must although for some they would not be a requirement.

   An excellent how-to book for creating a genealogy or family history book

   All in all, this is one of the very best and organized ways to write and publish a family history book. Rebecca Shamblin has done all the heavy work of actually creating the book in a skillful and complete way. It isn’t an easy “just press this button” task, but if you want to publish this type of book, then this is a fantastic guide. I always say ‘listen to the voice of experience when you tackle a difficult task.’

   My long time readers know I’m not one to gush over the latest and greatest. I take a more middle of the road approach, looking for the pros and cons.

   Seriously, I cannot find one con in this book. I can’t even come up with a suggestion for improvement.

   I strongly recommend that you purchase this book even if you aren’t ready to embark on creating a book. There are so many helpful technology tips – short cuts, how to, and step by step directions that it will benefit you in other computerized tasks you need to accomplish.

   Great Book and Well Organized

   The author of this book has done a wonderful job of writing the step-by-step book explaining how to use the software Family Book Creator along with Family Tree Maker and MS Word. She adds her own touches to the book as how she creates her own books. Another great perk is she offers her email address to answer questions if you have any. You will not be disappointed with her book. I highly recommend her book.

   Very helpful

   This book was just what I needed to help me finally write a family book that had personality rather than just a mundane list of impersonal facts. I’ve used Family Tree Maker for years to record family facts and recently purchased Family Book Creator that will put that data into a narrative type book almost with the press of a button. Rebecca Shamblin’s book explains step by step how to use these tools to create an amazing family book that also includes meaningful personal touches. Highly recommend this book.

   Excellent book with clear instructions to create a Family Book

   Very well written with lots of step-by-step details on how to use both Family Tree Maker and Family Book Creator to create your own family history book. The ability to develop and incorporate biographies in the work processor of your choice is genius! I never liked reading many genealogy periodicals because of the dry format. This shows how you can incorporate your ancestors life story (not just names and dates). The book even gives details on how to write a biography that even includes images. This is great when you want to include maps, house/farm photos, portraits, and even your source images that do not reside inside your family tree.

   So easy to follow that I started the day the book was received.

    A great tool to help both novice and seasoned writers accomplish the task

    Every family has a wealth of stories to share. All these stories need someone to write them down and make them into a legacy for years to come. Is that someone you? Why not? Rebecca Shamblin’s Leaving a Legacy is a great tool to help both novice and seasoned writers accomplish the task. First of all, it’s important to “Stop Researching… Stop Procrastinating… Stop Overthinking.” In other words, start writing! Granted, as the author admits, “taking years of research and trying to turn it into a cohesive narrative is no simple task.” But it can be done and you can do it. If someone has lived a life worthy of a story or two (or more), as we all have, then the process of writing these stories down should be attainable – one step at a time. From research to plotting to using ancestry websites to getting the facts straight and the story written, there is a process that will help you create a cherished memento of family stories.

    Rebecca Shamblin’s Leaving a Legacy: Turning Your Family Tree into a Family Book is a wonderful tool to help family story writers. This book is well laid out with clear guidelines for each step of the process. The author also urges writers to get on with the task and make the project come alive instead of remaining in research mode forever. It doesn’t have to be an onerous task that will consume your time. We all live busy lives. With this book as a guide, you’ll be able to apportion your time into manageable steps. At the end of the book, there are some supplemental insights and tips to further your writing goals. The important thing to remember is: “Your book is a gift to yourself, your family, and future generations. Telling the stories of our ancestors is a time-honored tradition, and we are lucky to have the ability to record those stories and ensure that they remain long after we are gone.” So very true!

    Help is needed and Leaving a Legacy provides just that

    If it’s your dream to produce your own family history book to share amongst family members and descendants in the future then Leaving a Legacy: Turn Your Family Tree into a Family Book by Rebecca Shamlin could be just the ticket. It’s the culmination of one’s research to create your own family history book, but it can be overwhelming to think about to go about the project. Where do you start? I can only imagine all the work needed to pull all the information together, write mini biographies and make those important decisions about all the technical stuff. Help is needed and Leaving a Legacy provides just that, being full of practical advice, with clear and detailed chapters covering the five phases of your project: Planning, Research, Writing, Printing and Distribution. Take the plunge and it can be your trusty manual, guiding you through the process and helping you get to grips with all the nitty gritty stuff behind the scenes. The aim is to create a beautifully illustrated masterpiece. To produce her books, Rebecca uses Family Tree Maker for her software, Family Creator, (a FTM plug-in) to create the structure of the book and Lulu.com, a print-on-demand service, to print and sell the book (also available in the U.K.) You may decide to go down a different route, as there are other options available, but even so, this book would be definitely useful, as it is full of expert tips and examples.

    A very important book for genealogists

    When delving into genealogical research and bulding our tree, it’s important to find factual information, not hearsay, and to not only depend on our memories & stories we’ve heard. It’s just as important when writing a family book, to ensure that when we’re writing it’s done so that it’s not boring, redundant, too long or too short. Although Im yet to write my book, I purchased Leaving a Legacy as soon as I saw it published and will be following every step, which will ensure I keep it short, simple and accurate. I encourage all serious genealogists, whether experienced or beginners, to add this book to their library.

    THANK YOU FOR THIS BOOK!

    The software/plugin to create a family history book is powerful and complicated. It is so easy to get overwhelmed and give up. In comes this book like a literal ANGEL!!! Author Rebecca Shamblin created a USER FRIENDLY, easy to follow guide that takes so much of the confusion out of the software. It’s like having a friend explain calculus so that you understand. I am now taking steps to FINALLY put together my family history book. I know I have a long road ahead of me, but with this book, that road won’t be as bumpy.

    Love this book!
